Discovering My Coaching Philosophy: Lessons Learned Along the Way

Rediscovering My Passion: Lessons Learned on My Coaching Journey

My journey in cheerleading began at the tender age of three when I took my first tumbling classes and discovered a love for the sport. Throughout my childhood, the dream of becoming a cheer coach burned brightly in my heart. However, as I entered high school, that passion began to wane, until the unexpected pause brought by the COVID-19 lockdown reignited the flame within me.

During this hiatus from cheer, I took the opportunity to reflect on my experiences as both an athlete and a coach. I delved into the lessons imparted by the coaches who had left a lasting impact on me, shaping the kind of coach I aspired to be. Today, I want to share four key lessons that have guided me on my coaching journey.

Lesson 1: The Athlete Comes First

One of the most valuable lessons I learned from my early coaches was the importance of prioritizing the well-being of each athlete. I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of support and encouragement, as coaches went above and beyond to ensure every athlete felt valued and supported.

During a particularly challenging practice session, one of my teammates was struggling with a new skill. Instead of rushing through the drills, our coach took the time to sit down with her, offering words of encouragement and a much-needed snack. This act of individualized attention momentarily shifted the focus from the team as a whole to the needs of one athlete. While it may have seemed counterintuitive at first, prioritizing the well-being of this individual ultimately paid off for the entire team. As she regained her confidence and rejoined the practice, her renewed energy and determination lifted the spirits of the entire squad, injecting a newfound sense of unity and resilience into our performance. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: by supporting each individual member, we strengthen the collective bond of the team, paving the way for shared success.

Lesson 2: Patience and Perspective

Another crucial lesson I learned was the significance of patience in the learning process. By creating a safe and judgment-free environment, my coach empowered us to embrace challenges and seek help when needed. This patience allowed us to grow and thrive, both as athletes and individuals.

I vividly remember a time when I was struggling to master a difficult tumbling pass. Frustration was mounting, and I was on the verge of giving up. However, my coach's unwavering patience and belief in my abilities gave me the courage to persevere. With each stumble, she offered words of encouragement and guidance, reminding me that progress takes time and effort.

Lesson 3: Understanding the Mechanics

Understanding the mechanics behind each skill was a game-changer for me. By breaking down complex skills into their fundamental components, my coach demystified the learning process and equipped me with the tools to coach myself effectively. This newfound understanding empowered me to take control of my progress and achieve new heights in my training.

When learning a new tumbling skill, my coach took the time to break it down into manageable steps, explaining the mechanics behind each movement. With his guidance, I was able to visualize the skill in a new light, making it easier to grasp and execute. This approach not only accelerated my learning but also gave me a deeper appreciation for the science behind cheerleading.

Lesson 4: Embracing Discomfort

Lastly, I learned the value of pushing beyond my comfort zone. While it wasn't always easy, I soon realized that the greatest rewards often lie on the other side of discomfort. Embracing this mindset not only accelerated my growth as an athlete but also instilled in me a lifelong love for the journey of self-improvement.

There were many times when I doubted my abilities and feared failure. However, with the encouragement of my coach, I learned to embrace discomfort as a catalyst for growth. Whether it was mastering a new skill or pushing through a grueling practice session, I discovered that stepping outside my comfort zone was the key to unlocking my full potential.

As I continue on my coaching journey, these lessons serve as my guiding principles, shaping my approach to coaching and inspiring me to empower others to reach their full potential. May they also serve as beacons of wisdom for athletes and parents alike, guiding them on their paths to greatness.
